Zurich's Opernhaus and Tonhalle Swap Homes for Prokofiev Cycle

A musical exchange between two of Switzerland's leading orchestras explores Prokofiev's symphonies with world-class soloists.

In a rare orchestral exchange, Zurich's Opernhaus and Tonhalle-Gesellschaft will trade venues and conductors for a four-part Prokofiev cycle this season. The collaboration, following their successful Rachmaninoff project in 2023, sees the orchestras performing in each other's homes under alternating batons of Gianandrea Noseda and Paavo Järvi - close friends whose musical camaraderie sparked this innovative programming.

The series showcases Prokofiev's Symphonies Nos. 3,4,6 and 7 alongside his concertos performed by luminaries including cellist Sol Gabetta, violinist Hilary Hahn, and pianists Daniil Trifonov and Hayato Sumino. Swiss composer Dieter Ammann's contemporary works add counterpoint as Creative Chair of the Tonhalle-Orchester, bridging eras in this thoughtful dialogue between musical past and present.
