Zurich Opera House Unveils Ambitious Renovation Plan
The Zurich Opera House has launched a global design competition to renovate and expand its iconic venue, marking a significant step in its evolution as a cultural hub. Known locally as the 'Fleischkäse,' the current extension will be replaced by a modern structure designed to enhance both functionality and aesthetics. The project, titled 'Zukunft Oper,' seeks to address longstanding logistical challenges while creating a more inclusive and accessible space for opera and ballet enthusiasts.
Matthias Schulz, the Opera House's Intendant, emphasized the importance of preserving live artistic experiences in an increasingly digital world. 'This project is not just about architecture; it's about safeguarding the future of live performance,' he said. The new design will feature public spaces such as an open foyer and terrace, inviting visitors to engage with the venue beyond performances.
With an estimated budget of 500 million Swiss francs, the project is a collaboration between public and private entities, including the newly established 'Stiftung Zukunft Opernhaus Zürich.' The winning design, to be selected by a jury chaired by renowned ETH professor Vittorio Magnano Lampugnani, will be announced in late 2027, with construction expected to commence by 2034.
