Maria Lassnig and Edvard Munch: A Dialogue on Life and Perception

The Kunsthaus Zürich is set to unveil a landmark exhibition, 'Maria Lassnig and Edvard Munch. Flow of Paint = Flow of Life,' opening on 2 October 2026. This first-ever double presentation of the Austrian painter Maria Lassnig and the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch promises to offer a profound exploration of the body, perception, and the cycle of life. The exhibition will feature 150 works, including 78 paintings, drawing from exceptional loans from the Munchmuseet in Oslo and the Maria Lassnig Foundation in Vienna.

Lassnig and Munch, separated by more than half a century, share a deep interest in the human condition. While Munch's work delves into the cycle of life, death, and renewal, Lassnig's 'body awareness pictures' focus on internal states and self-reflection. This exhibition highlights their affinities and differences, offering new perspectives on their artistic legacies.

The collaboration between the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Hamburger Kunsthalle, along with the Maria Lassnig Foundation and Munchmuseet, brings together a rich tapestry of artworks. The exhibition will be accompanied by a lavishly illustrated catalogue and a series of public events, including guided tours and a concert by the Zürcher Kammerorchester.
