Zürich's New Kühne-Akademie Aims to Shape the Future of Opera

A groundbreaking initiative to train the next generation of opera singers and leaders in music theater.
June 10, 2026

The Opernhaus Zürich and the Kühne-Stiftung have joined forces to launch the Kühne-Akademie, a pioneering institution designed to nurture the next generation of opera singers and music theater leaders. This initiative, set to begin in autumn 2026, combines artistic excellence with leadership training, offering a holistic approach to career development in the opera world.

The academy will provide specialized modules for singers, covering not only vocal and performance skills but also essential career tools like contract negotiation, financial literacy, and mental health awareness. By 2027, the program will expand to include a leadership track for future intendants, focusing on strategy, innovation, and personal development.

Emilie Reichmann of the Kühne-Stiftung emphasizes the academy's mission to foster both artistic and strategic prowess, ensuring the sustainability of music theater. Meanwhile, Matthias Schulz, Intendant of the Opernhaus Zürich, highlights Zürich's emerging role as a global hub for opera education and innovation.

This collaboration builds on the longstanding partnership between the Opernhaus Zürich and the Kühne-Stiftung, further solidifying Zürich's reputation as a center for cultural excellence. With its comprehensive curriculum and international outlook, the Kühne-Akademie is poised to make a lasting impact on the future of opera.
