From 3 July to 25 October 2026, the Kunsthaus Zürich presents ‘Vilhelm Hammershøi. The Eye That Listens,’ the first comprehensive museum exhibition in Switzerland dedicated to the Danish artist. Known as the ‘Vermeer of the North,’ Hammershøi’s work captures the essence of silence and light, transforming everyday interiors into profound visual experiences. His sparse compositions, often featuring his wife Ida seen from behind, evoke a sense of quiet contemplation that resonates deeply with modern audiences.
This exhibition not only showcases Hammershøi’s iconic interiors but also explores his lesser-known portraits and cityscapes, placing his oeuvre within a broader art-historical context. Curated by Jonas Beyer and Sandra Gianfreda, the retrospective highlights Hammershøi’s intellectual affinity with contemporaries like James McNeill Whistler and Félix Vallotton, underscoring his enduring relevance in the art world.
Accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue and a diverse public programme, including film screenings and guided tours, this exhibition promises to be a cultural highlight of 2026, offering visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the subtle beauty of Hammershøi’s art.
