An archive entered, rather than observed
Acts of Care draws on photographs, pamphlets and testimony from the Township AIDS Project, which worked in Johannesburg and Soweto during the early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Virtual reality reconstructs a 1990s counselling room; augmented reality returns visitors to the visual language of safe-sex campaigns; a poster station allows the archive to keep growing.
Care as historical method
The exhibition centres the practical intelligence of communities responding to illness amid stigma and incomplete public knowledge. Enea Motaung, a nurse and leader of the Township AIDS Project for fourteen years, narrates the reconstructed counselling space. Her testimony gives institutional memory a human scale.
A programme that remains open
Produced by Two Name Games with the GALA Queer Archive, the exhibition continues through World AIDS Day. Saturday activations take place on 26 September, 31 October and 28 November. The work is recommended for visitors aged sixteen and over because of its material on health and safe sex.
